Stepper motors move a part of a revolution with each control signal change. They typically contain an arrangement of magnets and coil windings that allow us to move the motor incrementally (in steps). Motors with 400 steps per revolution or 0.9 degrees per step can be obtained at a reasonable cost. Motors with 200 and fewer steps per revolution are more common and usually cheaper. If the motor is not allowed to be overloaded (and thus to slip), we can keep track of the position of the motor by keeping track of how many times we have sent it a control signal change. We will cover the control of stepper motors that have four wires, meaning that they have two sets of windings, in detail. These are called bipolar motors, and we will use one that needs 12 volts at about 1 ampere for our experiments. The one I used needed 100 steps to make one complete revolution. The Xavien amplifier we use for our other motors will be able to control this motor, so no other expense is involved. Any bipolar motor can be used that has voltages and amperage characteristics that can be provided by the amplifier we are using (up to 3 amps at between 12 and 55 volts). Other types of stepper motors are controlled with similar schemes but require more complicated power supplies and electronics. The four-wire motors require only one power supply, and the amplifiers we will use for the DC motors can run them. Each amplifier has to be able to control two sets of motor windings, and most H bridgetype dual amplifiers have this capability.
